Phunkwhatchaheard! Radio, a weekly funk and soul show hosted by my man Jaekim StackCache which airs every Thursday* from 7-8pm Central Time on KTRU 91.7fm in Houston, just turned a year old this past week. To celebrate, Jae put together a one-year anniversary show Thursday that featured a special guest mix by Austin’s DJ Chicken George — DJ, producer, and O.G. alum of Houston’s acclaimed Soular Grooves Radio show.

Chicken George, who has two EPs out on Swedish Brandy (The Swed.u.s.h Connection, and The Swed.u.s.h Connection vol. 2), throws down a dope mix of modern funk with some heavy remixes of classic tunes. Check it out:

There’s a special historical twist to Chicken George and JaeKim broadcasting together on KTRU again. I first met both of these cats about 10 years or so ago at that same station.

Jae (who then went by the name Theory) was doing an underground Hip-Hop radio show at the time called the Twelve Inch Sub with a dude from Vancouver named Eddie Question. I was doing my own Hip-Hop show at KVRX in Austin in those days, and wanted to stop in and check out how folks were getting down back in my hometown. Jae and Eddie welcomed me into the studio where they were handling the mics and board duties. They introduced me to Chicken George, who was holding things down in the mix on the turntables.

Fast forward to ’09, and there they are again in the same station where I met them — Jae on the boards, Chicken in the mix. Hearing them together on this anniversary show brings back old memories. It all comes back around.

Since that time, Chicken, Jae and I have all had our stints at DJ Sun‘s Soular Grooves, so I consider these cats part of my extended fam.

The Phunkwhatchaheard! anniversary celebrations continue in Austin on May 30, with Chicken George and DJ Starsign spinning along side Jaekim at Malverde:

Gabe Vaughn – Gospel Mix – Part 2

Gabe Vaughn - Gospel Mix Part 2

My good homie Gabe, a consummate crate digger, soul aficionado, and all-around awesome dude, dug deep in his music vaults and put together this incredible selection of gospel tunes.

The tracklist can be found at the end of this post or on his blog. First, some backstory on my man Gabe.

Little known fact: My first ever DJ gig at a club was June 9, 2001 at a place on 6th Street in Austin called the Empanada Parlour. The party was to celebrate the launch of an online magazine/event promotions site called Suckarepellent.

The main event was outside on the big stage, with Bavu headlining a roster of Texas live acts and Firewheel quarterbacking the action on the decks.

My club debut took place in the small room indoors. There were four DJs on that bill. Three of us (myself, JD, and DJ Starsign) drove in from Houston the day before, making our way out of town just as Tropical Storm Allison came in and unleashed a hundred-year flood that practically drowned my hometown. The other DJ and lone official Austinite of the bunch, was a young dude named Gabe, who at the time went under the name Dr. Ekl.

I first met Gabe, then a producer and member of a collective of upstart MCs and writers called Arctectonics, through the radio show I used to do on KVRX called the House of Phat Beats.

I’d known him just as a young Hip-Hop kid, but that night at Empanada Parlour, he talked to me about his passion for older records. He did a set of funk and soul classics — Ohio Players, Marvin Gaye, stuff like that. I remember digging his set a lot.

Eight years later, Gabe is in DEEP. He’s always had a voracious appetite for music, and a superb ear for finding treasures amongst the masses of styles and sounds floating out in the wild. He’s made a name for himself as a member of the crews that host the The Second Sunday Sock Hop and the soon-to-be-renamed Waxploitation! parties in Austin.

Dude is really talented and knowledgeable, and you can tell that easily by listening to the selections he put together above. I used to play songs for him and his homeboys up at the radio show, but now (and really, for a long time now), I look up to him for what he knows and has taught me about music. I also feel blessed that on my first outing as a DJ, I witnessed an early stage of Gabe‘s musical journey, and that makes that night that much more special to me.

Enough of the sentimental stuff, tho. Scroll back up and download this mix. It’s chock full of great tunes, and it will make you feel good about life.

Here’s the tracklisting:

The Consolers – Glad To Be In The Number (Nashboro)
CBS Trumpeteers – Milky White Way (Nashboro)
The Birds of Harmony – Oh What A Good Time (Gospel)

Just saw this on a tweet from Arthur magazine, and it’s too amazingly beautiful for me not to post it here. Nina Simone performing “Four Women” and “Backlash Blues” live at the Harlem Festival in New York’s Central Park in 1969:

You know what, I’m just gonna go ahead and post all five parts. Here’s the rest:

“Be My Husband”

“Ain’t got no – I got life” / “I loves you Porgy”

“To be young, gifted and black” / “Revolution”

“Are you ready?”

:: Welfare :: May 5ives …

5 May 2009 category: Downloads, Empanadamn, Lil Tiger, Music, Updates, Welfare no comments yet.

Welcome to the Cinco de Mayo edition of Welfare, where fake-Mexican Lil Tiger and real-Mexican Empanadamn each serve up five 5ives to get you through 5/5. (Not that we actually thought that far ahead and included anything remotely Mexico-related in our selections or anything. That would require planning and forethought. We don’t really do that here.)

(Click the song names to take you to the off-site sharing pages where you can download the tunes. For detailed instructions on how to navigate the sharing sites where we host our files, we’ve got instructions at the end of this post)

empanadamn | May I?

The Alchemist “That’ll Work” (Feat. Three 6 Mafia & Juvenile)
New cut off of The Alchemist’s forthcoming Chemical Warfare. This beat is murderlous. The rapping is kinda third-rate, but hey, it’s 2009!

Teairra Mari “Diamonds” (Feat. Kanye West)
I don’t condone diamonds, so in exchange, I’ll put this song on your finger. I don’t care if you say no.

The Secret Handshake “Brand New Love”
An album cut from Dallas native Luis Dubuc’s The Secret Handshake. My Name Up In Lights carries forward on that electronic rock / bubble gum / synth pop tip. I’m not really feeling the album on the whole. Dude needs to put the breaks on the auto-tune and mix it up with some females vocals. I’d be OK with instrumentals though.

Novalima “Yo Voy” (Seiji Remix)
Peruvian Afro-Latin blaps with the Seiji drum treatment. Escucha esto.

Datarock “New Days Dawn”
One of the more toned down cuts from the poppy/synth rock Norwegian duo’s soon to be released album Red.

dj lil tiger | I’m not a Mexican, but I used to play one back in Texas

Geraldo Pino and the Heartbeats – Afro Coco Soul (live)
Heavy West African funk and soul vibes from Sierra Leone’s Geraldo Pino, an early influence of the man they call Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Major Lazer – Hold The Line (Poirier remix)
Montréal’s Ghislain Poirier (a recent addition to the Ninja Tune stable) puts his smoking hot Wha-La-La-Leng Riddim underneath the already intense debut from Major Lazer, the Diplo/Switch mega-collabo that got all the kiddies all twisted up. Mr. Lexx and Santigold on the vox, of course.

Organized Konfusion – Decisions
Here’s a little gem I used to play endlessly during my moodier Hip-Hop days. This is off the America Is Dying Slowly compilation for AIDS awareness circa 1996. I forget how good Monch and Prince Po used to sound together.

The Aislers Set – Walked in Line (Live)
I miss The Aislers Set. They’re one of my all time favorite bands, and it saddens me that most folks have never heard of them. I remain devout. This tune is a cover of Joy Division’s “Walked In Line” from The Aislers Sets’ sessions for John Peel (R.I.P.) in 2003 at Maida Vale. More detail about those recordings here.

Vanessa Freeman – Sunrays
The ever prolific Vanessa Freeman pours sunrays all over your soul. One of the more beautiful tracks on The Chromatic Universe compilation that Alex Attias put together back in 2002.

** INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING **
We host all our Welfare downloads off-site, so what you need to do to download them is to click on the song name in the post, and then look for a download link on the page that that takes you to.

We mostly use divShare, so for divShare follow these steps to download the songs:

– Click on the name of the song. That will take you to a divShare page.

– On the divShare page, look for the black circle with an arrow pointing down. Below that arrow is a link that says “Download original”. Click that link and after a few seconds, the download should start automatically.

That should do it.

If the file is hosted on some other site besides divShare (like ZShare or MediaFire or something) then just look for a link on that site’s page that says download. When you click on the download link, it will probably do something similar to divShare and make you wait a handful of seconds before it starts the download (or offers a specific link to the download).

Hit us up in the comments if you need further instruction. We’re here to help. Thanks.

50 Years Of The Beat: Bossa Nova

30 Apr 2009 category: Music, Reeewind no comments yet.

While dropping a gem on em, I was listening to my local jazz station and chanced upon a special on bossa nova.

I thought this was going to be the typical white-washed doc focusing on Charlie Byrd/Stan Getz, etc. … Well, did I eat my fair share of crow or what? This 2 hr special was official. It totally blew my mind to hear laaar gloooves like Tenório Jr. on a commercial station. My mind was blown at how thorough the research was, props to Simon Rentner for putting in the work. Hopefully the older white folk demographic tuning in learned more about the music and decided to purchase these obscure works.

The piece featured interviews with folks like Joyce, Carlos Lyra, Cesar Camargo Mariano (Sambalanço Trio, Som Tres, CIA) and featured quite a few rare live recordings from the bottles alley era. The tidbits on João Gilberto alone got me “opin.”

Super duper listen….

Soul! – Archives of NY’s PBS music show circa ’68-’73

23 Apr 2009 category: Music, NYC, Video no comments yet.

I was doing some catching up on the Strut recently and found this amazing archive of Soul!, a PBS music and interview show in New York from the late ’60s and early ’70s:

This entertainment-variety-talk show was not only a vehicle to promote African-American artistry, community and culture, but also a platform for political expression and the fight for social justice. It showcased classic live musical performances from funk, soul, jazz, and world musicians, and had in-depth, extraordinary interviews with political, sports, literary figures and more. It was the first program on WNET to be recorded with the then-new technology of videotape, and most of the shows were recorded in real-time—not live, but unedited.

Soul ran from 1968 to 1973.

This is a goldmine of incredible performance footage and musical history. You can spend days watching this stuff. It’s an absolute treasure.

The shows include performances by the Nite-Liters, Earth, Wind and Fire, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Ashford and Simpson, Max Roach, and much more.

The ever-knowledgeable Oliver Wang provides some additional context:

The history of the show – and its host – is really, really fascinating. Not only are the performances just incredible but so were the interviews considering the time and place they were happening. Haizlip was an openly gay Black intellectual and Wald managed to find the episode where he’s interviewing Louis Farrakhan – half the audience seemed to be from the NOI – and Haizlip asks him where gays fit into the Nation’s overall mission and membership. It was a fascinating moment, to say the least, especially circa 1970.

I have been watching and re-watching the Latin Soul episode from November 15, 1972 hosted by Felipe Luciano and featuring performances by Tito Puente, Willie Colón and their respective bands. You can watch the full episode below, or for better navigation, you can go to NY’s THIRTEEN PBS site, and follow along with the chapter index they have below the video.

I get chills listening to a young Héctor Lavoe singing “Aguanile” with Willie Colón y Su Orquesta. It’s breathtaking. (That performance begins at the 35:16 mark, or chapter 10, if you go to the navigation on the THIRTEEN site).

Watch the whole episode, tho. Luciano breaks down the history of the New York latin music scene and paints a particularly vivid and colorful portrait of New York in that era.

(If you don’t see the video below, there might be a Flash compatibility issue or some other technical glitch with the embed. Just go to the THIRTEEN site. You can watch it from there.)

The whole archive is like this. It will melt your face. Please check it out.

Now break yuh penis, break yuh penis…

17 Apr 2009 category: Misc., News, Video 2 comments.

Daggering classic. It gets good at ~1:04.

Via App.com

Jamaica’s latest dance craze called “daggerin” may be responsible for hospitals treating a flood of young men with broken penises.

The subject of many recent songs in dance halls across the country, daggerin is sexual in nature and involves a man and a woman gyrating suggestively and aggressively in crotch-locked positions.

With the number of broken-penis cases having almost tripled in a year after the rise of daggerin, it appears the “dry-sex” dance moves have evolved to bizarre sexual practices among Jamaican youth, according to The Sun.

Doctors at Kingston Public Hospital report injuries occur during fast, rough intercourse and can result in permanent damage when the man fractures his member as it hits the woman’s pubic bone.

Some believe the practice of daggerin is threatening to undermine the manhood of the island nation.
