  • 10 buhbOmp - 10 sep 2008 - dj starsign - Pink Slip Mix (aka Release the Beast) -

EPISODE 10 --=(] buhbOmp radio [)=-- buhbOmp radio is a podcast featuring hip-hop, soul, funk, dancehall, soca, broken beat, Miami/Atlanta bass, and much more, brought to you by the buhbOmp crew: JD, Lil Tiger, Empanadamn, Elz, Cashless and friends.

For our 10th episode, we're blessed to present an all-vinyl, one-take, eclectic mix from Austin's prolific DJ, designer, artist, musician — DJ STARSIGN:

"DJ Starsign was more of a rock guy (maybe new wave rock is more appropriate) when he started listening to De La Soul, Ice Cube, Run DMC, EPMD, BDP, Jungle Brothers, etc... and fell in love with beats via old funk, soul, disco, and even rock records. He bought a cheap belt-driven turntable at a pawn shop and started buying dusty vinyl in an effort to discover more beat-oriented music. Choosing to find good music from across the board as opposed to limiting himself to one specific genre, Starsign eventually started djing where the m.o. was to play anything as long as it had a good vibe and it fit with the rest of the mix.

"As a disciple of Bomb Squad, Dust Brothers, Prince Paul and Marley Marl, any record with a heavy beat would receive special attention. More than just playing records, Starsign sees the role of a dj as a creator of atmosphere. Taking elements from classic funk, hazy underground disco, house, electro, old school hip and assorted beats and pieces, Starsign's sound is a melodic, spaced-out, rhythmic, soulful and nostalgic affair that aims to move your boots and make you feel 10 feet tall."

  • 05 buhbOmp - 13 jul 2006 - ish - thats wus up!! -

EPISODE 05 --=(] buhbOmp radio [)=-- a wide variety of styles from hip-hop, dancehall, soca, broken beat, Miami/Atlanta bass, and much more, brought to you by the buhbOmp crew: JD, Lil Tiger, Empanadamn, Elz, Cashless and friends.

For our fifth episode, we present "Thats Wus Up!!", a debut mix from Houston native and vet Ish. This mix is a virtual tour through the past, present, and future of electronic music. Playing the role of "Disco Pimp", Ish defies the normal logistics of mixing by throwing in his own remixes throughout the endeavor. Cruising at a speed of just over 124 bpm's, there is a lil' something on here for every dancefloor dwellar.

"I started out as a teenager in a dance crew battling at clubs to the deep house of the early nineties, long before I got into Hip-Hop. So dance music is nothing new to me. Some may be taken back by this mix simply because I have been an active member of the local Houston Hip-Hop scene for so long now, and the people who know me, know me primarily as a Hip-Hop deejay. Those who are surprised, just don't know my past. Some will even hate, it is these folks who are the ones that are usually playin the wall while their gal's on the dancefloor though. You got to understand, there is no limits or boundaries with this deejay shit. Your job is to bring it, and make asses move ... and if you ain't knowing ... you must be hoe'n. Thats Wus Up!!"

As an active member of the Houston Hip-Hop community, you can usually catch Ish doing his thing with the local Houston act "Lower Life Form" www.lowerlifeform.com or as a member of Adio Footwear's Musical Team at www.rockadio.com, and of course on his personal page www.myspace.com/ish.

Ish would like to thank the BuhBomp crew for allowing him to host his mix, as well as influencing him heavily along the way.

(Of course, we here at BuhBomp should be doing the thanking. We're all about this shit, and best believe the influences run both ways. BUMP THIS MIX OR YOU'RE SOFT.)

EPISODE 03 --=(] buhbOmp radio [)=-- a wide variety of styles from hip-hop, dancehall, soca, broken beat, Miami/Atlanta bass, and much more, brought to you by the buhbOmp crew: JD, Lil Tiger, Empanadamn, Elz, Cashless and friends.

Our third episode is another remix masterpiece, this one carefully crafted by Houston's J.Knowledge, who sets his mix apart by blending old and new styles and crossing regions while keeping it Hip-Hop from start to finish. More on the mix and the man behind it in J.Knowledge's own words:

"all i ever wanted to do was make dope mixes since about 1994. i credit two things for that, some j.rocc mix i heard for the clothing company drawls (LOL), and my friend philip speer's stereo that would play two tapes at the same time. i would cue up an acapella on one deck, and an instrumental on the other and press play at the same time. you can imagine how budget it sounded but it lit a fire under my ass to want to do this shit.

the j.rocc tape had me wondering how the hell he was mixing more than two sources at the same time. i was amazed by that tape and i guess that's where i draw inspiration from even today, although i lost that tape years ago. my goal has always been to make the dopest mix i could and also i wanted to slap people upside they head like that j.rocc tape did me way back when. i want people to go 'there's no way he did this live!!!!' and it should be pretty obvious it isn't.

equipment used: two 1200s, vestax06, and akai, dps12 (recorder)

there was no computer trickery involved for the making of the mix. i would record something, stop, and then go re-record over it on another track, dropping the record on time with the previous one. for this project you can imagine how crazy it was to mix down, i think i used something like 77 tracks total.

i've been into music my whole life, but i guess i started buying records seriously in '94, and making tapes seriously in about '96. my collection is about 6k at this point but im trying to weed some stuff out."
