dj lil tiger | cool and quiet, but quick to start up a riot …

Abstract Truth – Get Another Plan (Extended Mix)
Monique Bingham‘s voice is just too beautiful. Abstract Truth is known for their house classic “We Had a Thing”, but the drums on this tune rule my world. I think this dropped in 1996, well before this type of shit was on my radar. Shouts to Aser for putting me on to this many moons ago. To add some perspective to your time warp, feast your eyes on this.

Erup – Mek Noise
Been in a dancehall mood lately, and this tune off the Dashboard Riddim has been in my heavy rotation of late. Another hot production from Truck Back and Erup, the folks that brought you the massive “Click Mi Finga.”

Demarco – Gal A You (raw)
**Audio NSFW** Another fire tune from Demarco, who’s “Fallen Soldiers” tune mashed everything last year. This one is off the Outada Riddim, which came out some time back in October, I think. No matter, this shit stays hot. And I can’t lie, I’m a total sucker for these throwback riddims anyway.

Witchdoctor feat. OutKast – Dez Only 1
Gotta take it back a bit with this one. Some of y’all might remember Witchdoctor’s “Holiday”. I know in Houston and in Austin, we played the fuck out of this tune for a long, LONG time. What folks might not know is that Witchdoctor put out a full-length solo album called A S.W.A.T. Healin’ Ritual that had some real gems on it. Not everything from that record has held up over time, but this tune still does it for me. It doesn’t hurt that 3 Stacks and Sir Lucious Left Foot put it down real strong. I can’t believe it’s been over 10 years since this song came out.

Mandrill – Mango Meat
Since I’m already looking back, here’s another one from the vaults. I’ve mentioned this one before. One of my favorite Hip-Hop songs of all time (from probably my favorite Hip-Hop album of all time) is the Jungle Brothers’ “Straight Out the Jungle,” which was born from the greatness of this Mandrill masterpiece.

Aaliyah “Rock The Boat (Stimulated Remix)
I always thought that I would get to meet Aaliyah. Baby Girl Rest In Peace.

Brandy “Drum Song”
This is probably the only track from her latest album that works in a DJ set. It’s got somewhat of a smooth, broken feel to it. I used to not like Brandy because she looked like a goldfish with braids, but you can’t deny that she has some bangers. Still, I can look past Moesha and all that as she’s developed into a nice looking woman. But if it came down to it and I had to pick between her and Monica in a battle of “The Boy Is Mine”, Monica wins.

Slim “Good Lovin'” (Feat. Ryan Leslie & Fabolous)
WOW! This track’s got the perfect amount of knock, funk, bounce and sessiness to it, rapping aside. Slim can be hit or miss, but this one’s a killa. Ryan Leslie is becoming a personal favorite for current productions the more I hear him. Hello BPMs in the 90s.

Amel Larrieux “Giving Something Up”
Amel has that winning combination of looks and sangin skills. However, seeing her live is a different thing. Yes, it’s live and in person, BUT she goes off on scattin’ (no 2 girls, one cup-o) reminiscent of Kim Wayans as the lounge singer doing “When The Saints Go Marching In” in “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.” With that, I love this track.

Notorious B.I.G. “Just Playin'” (Dreams)
Just because. (PS. I still have a crush on Dawn from En Vogue.)

Vibe on J.Dilla’s legacy …

Really good read on J.Dilla in the latest Vibe magazine, and the trials and tribulations Dilla’s mom has been dealing with since the passing of her son.

100 Hip Hop heads you must follow on Twitter (Buhbomp related)

13 Jan 2009 category: Cashless, Tricknology, Updates no comments yet.

From The Rap Up Blog

Twitter, the microblogging platform that allows people to share their thoughts with the world in 140 characters or less, is everyone’s latest web obsession. Contrary to what your grandma said, though, Twitter is more than just a chatterbox of lunch updates. It’s a chatterbox of breakfast, lunch, and dinner updates. Jokes aside, Twitter is a fun way to connect with friends, family, ex-lovers, and online stalkers. And did I mention that it’s the only site where you’ll find Erykah Badu and Amanda Diva debating sexy pics or Count Bass D wondering why no one ever toasts bagel on the outside?

In NO particular order, here are 100 hip-hop people to follow on Twitter:

39. Don Cannon – Only slightly less influential than Jimmy Iovine
40. Cashless – Deadly on the 1’s & 2’s
41. Jean Grae – Better than your favorite female rapper

That’s right, just below Don Cannon… cannon.. cannon… and right above Jean “No Whut Whut” Grae, there’s lil ole’ me. Although the list is strongly emphasized as being in NO PARTICULAR ORDER, I’d like that somehow I below amongst the names named for a reason. Needless to say, I’m honored and I appreciate the big ups in the description. Either way, follow me like Tupac on the adlibs of Hail Mary.

The Do-Over

True Hip-Hop Stories series directed by D-Nice.

12 Jan 2009 category: Films, Music, NYC, Reeewind, Video 2 comments.

His name is Derrick Jones, the TR808, but you can call him D-Nice. And while you were pounding away your nonexistent screenplay and working on finishing that second short stack of pancakes, D-Nice has been quietly directing a series of short films that chronicle obscure twists and turns in hip hop’s private quarters that have shaped some of the biggest cuts in it’s history. Also, if weren’t aware, dude is pretty sharp with the clickety flash as well.

Here, D-Nice captures some inside scoop on Joe Ski Love’s hit “Pee Wee Dance”. Stick around for some watershed commentary on “ringtone rappers”.

There’s 6 episodes so far, and by the upload date and times, I’m sure there will be much more to come. You can peep the whole series here.

Bonus: The irony of Masta Ace’s piece is only matched by the films beauty.

Serato dudes, get some of this in your life.

12 Jan 2009 category: Misc., Tricknology 6 comments.

A few versions back the all knowing engineers over at Serato removed the ability to export your playlist from the “Review” option. You can have that functionality again with the help of Mixlist (OSX only).

I’ve used it only twice so far and I’m highly satisfied with the results. Peep game.

MixList is a small “plug-in” application to intelligently record and export your playlist from Scratch Live.

Export your playlists
MixList can export your playlist as either a CSV or XML file for quick and easy sharing between applications.

Intelligent playlisting
An intelligent algorithm lists only the tracks that you’ve played and not those which you have only previewed.

Transparent interface
MixList’s interface can be transparent and can float over other application windows so you can easily monitor them.

Inside the Circle on MTV this Sunday

10 Jan 2009 category: Films, Video 5 comments.

Mark your calendars and set your DVRs. MTV is airing the 2007 acclaimed B-Boy documentary Inside the Circle on Sunday at 11am ET/10am CT and 6pm ET/5pm CT.

INSIDE THE CIRCLE tells the story of two strikingly talented
b-boys, Josh and Omar, former best friends who become rivals when they join competing dance crews. Immersed in the b-boy culture of defiant creativity, Omar rises to international renown while Josh tangles with the Texas criminal justice system. Both of them struggle to keep dance at the center of their lives, and the “B-Boy City” competitive events thrown by visionary street dancer Romeo Navarro serve as emotional milestones in their journey to adulthood.

Romeo, who is pictured above and is featured in the documentary, is an Austin legend and institution. He’s the dude behind the famous B-Boy City event in Austin every year that showcases b-boy talent from across the globe. B-Boy City is approaching it’s 16th anniversary. Remarkable.

Back when I was doing radio in Austin, I was always honored when Romeo and his crew would stop by the station. I threw a benefit at a community center in South Austin around that time, and I asked Romeo to help spread the word and to put together a b-boy competition to coincide with the concert I was organizing. Dude brought in so many kids from all over the city, I was really overwhelmed. He’s the main reason the event was a success, and he pretty much did that on his own. I’ve never forgotten that, so I’m geeked to see him and his peoples get MTV exposure. I wish nothing but the best for that dude, and for all those involved in this film and that scene.

Here’s the trailer for Inside the Circle:

More info on the film here.

Here’s a clip of an interview with Romeo from a few years ago:

And here are some highlights from B-Boy City 15 that are part of the bonus material from the Inside the Circle DVD:

Emynd drops A Bunch of R&B on you

9 Jan 2009 category: Downloads, Mixes, Music no comments yet.

Just got around to checking out Emynd‘s latest R&B mix, which is part of Crossfaded Bacon‘s 1st & 15th (Pretty Much) Mix Series. (I dig that they’re on BPT — BuhbOmp People’s Time — with their postings, too. See: Welfare). I’ve been on an R&B kick lately, so this arrived with perfect timing.

Emynd hails from Philly and is one of the most diverse and talented DJs and producers out there doing it right now. He’s also the dude behind NolaBounce, the Bounce music blog we’ve mentioned here several times. If you’re not up on the 15 million things this dude has going on right now, you need to make some time and get familiar, pronto.

Here’s the mix:
Emynd — A Bunch of R&B

And here’s what he has to say about it:

This month, I (Emynd) wanted to make a mix of some of the new-ish R&B I’ve been into so I could listen to it on my just-long-enough-to-be-annoying drive to work every day. Some of it is cheesy, some of it is sappy, some of it is HARD, and some of it is guilty pleasure steez, but whatever… I fux with this stuff. …

Tracklisting:
1. Bobby Valentino ft Lil Wayne “Your Smile”
2. Raheem Devaughn “Friday”
3. John Legen ft Brandy “Quickly”
4. Bobby Valentino “Pull It Off”
5. Justin Timberlake & Esmee Denters “Follow My Lead”
6. Slim “Is This The Way”
7. Ryan Leslie ft St. Laz “The Remedy”
8. Ryan Leslie ft Fabolous and Slim “Good Lovin”
9. Slim ft Yung Joc “So Fly”
10. R-Kelly “Club To A Bedroom”
11. Nitt, 9th Ward, & Gucci Mane “Do It”
12. Montell Jordan ft Dougie Fresh “Left Alone”
13. Lloyd “Baddest Bitch”
14. Girlicious ft Kardinal Offishall “I.O.U.1.”
15. Usher “The Dirt”
16. Rich Girl ft Bun B “24s”
17. T-Pain ft Polow Da Don “My Own Steps”
18. One Chance “Juke”
19. Usher ft Ludacris “Dat Girl Right There”
20. O’Neal McKnight ft Heavy D & Big Ali “Champagne Red Lights”
21. Keri Hilson “What Channel”

Also, holler at the dude on Twitter. It’s endless entertainment:

:: Reeewind :: More H-Town* classics inna G-Funk stylee…

6 Jan 2009 category: Houston, Music, Reeewind, Video 1 comment.

Ace Duece – R.S.F.

You’re gonna have to listen to this one to get the acronym.

Big Mello – Funkwichamind

R.I.P. to one of my favorite rappers from the hometown. Some of that 90’s G-funk sound that was so popular in Houston back in the day. Video starts with an ill Curtis Mayfield remake.

Menace Clan – What U Sayin

Menace Clan was signed to Rap-A-Lot although they were from South Central, LA. As the god, R. Gabriel is quick to point out, Menace Clan was part of the infamous Project Blowed / Good Life crews.

Blacc Monks – Buddha Nature

MR. 3-2’s voice was clearly influenced by Snoop.

South Circle – New Day

Tony Draper’s custom convertible Lexus got a lot of play in all of the SuaveHouse media.
