Can you play that one song?

In: Music, NYC

Derek Lo AKA D-Lo AKA The Big Asian started a blog dedicated to DJs and the mind-blasting requests that we have to deal with. I could see some repetition happening, but still a funny read.

http://www.canyouplaythatonesong.com

You can request music from D-Lo every Friday at Happy Ending located in Chinatown/LES.

We’re on JAMPT here (that’s Jamaican, Arubian, Mexican People Time), which as you know means we’re a few (several?) days late with this. But the getting is still good. We’re glad to have Cashless back on the scene this time around. Enjoy. …

Drake – November 18th
The buzz surrounding Degrassi actor turned Rapper/Singer (No Joaquin), Drake, is deafening but seemingly warranted. Over the weekend, Drake dropped his latest mixtape, So Far Gone, and the response on the blogger/Twitter spheres was overwhelming. The track November 18th is somewhat of a homage to the late great, Dj Screw and the seminal track June 27th. While I think November 18th lacks some of the rough edges that make the O.G. so real, the polish of November 18th will finally bring some of that same realness to the clurb and/or the local becky experience.

Dj Deckstream feat Mos Def – Life is Good
Wanna hear something crazy? I like a new Mos Def song. Japanese dj, Deckstream of M-Flo fame, comes through with some jazzy heatrock production steez.

Outkast – SpottieOttieDopalicious (I.M. Elliot & Quix22 Club remix)
One of my favorite songs of all time, this time with a wobbly bmore/club feel to it. I’ve never heard of either I.M. Elliot or Quix22, color me disconnected, but when you make Spottie Ottie hipster friendly without offending me, I’m all about it.

BLK JKS – Lakeside
Nothing new here, just reminded myself and you people that BLK JKS will be playing at SXSW on March 19th. More info here.

Michael Jackson – PYT (U-Tern edit)
Canada’s king of the boogie edit, U-tern, hits hard again with a re-edited demo version of the MJ Classic. Speaking of the devil, make sure that you drop by Julien’s Auctions at the Beverly Hills Hilton this April to cop some nice joints from MJ’s personal collection of crazy shit. Personally, I’m feeling that animatronic head. :Pause:

Red Cafe “Hottest In Da Hood”
Brookly’s Red Cafe has been one lucky rapper who gets a hold of hoTT BeatZ. This one reminds me of Obie Trice’s track “The Set Up”. I’m a sucker for that percolating sound.

Papoose “Amnesia”
Remember when Papoose was supposed to be that guy who brought hip-hop back to New York? Yeah, me neither. What about that 1.5 million dollar record contract through DJ Kay Slay? At any rate, Sade is the best.

Big Boi “Ringtone”
My ol’ buddy Antwan André Patton got a new album coming out called “Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty”. This is one of the cuts on it on the uptempo, auto-tune tip. Also on the horizon for 2009 is an album from the other André, as well as a duet album in the form of a group called OutKast.

Busta Rhymes “Conglomerate” (Feat. Young Jeezy & Jadakiss)
This song really annoyed me in the beginning, but I’m a sucker for girls with accents (and I don’t mean Hyundai).

Public Enemy “Lost At Birth”
I’m watching Pineapple Express and there’s some great music throughout the movie. The last scene is hilarious, and I don’t even smoke weed! This track is used when Dale & Red are mounting up like regulators and mobbing down the street in a yellow Daewoo.

Marvin Gaye vs Marc Mac – Sexual Healing
4hero‘s Marc Mac gives “Sexual Healing” the treatment.

Les McCann – Beaux J. Poo Boo
From one of my favorite Les McCann albums, 1971’s Invitation to Openness. Real Hedz Know the DealTM.

Big Daddy Kane – On The Bugged Tip
CLASSIC. BDK kills. Nuff said.

Ms. Dynamite – Watch Over Them
Consciousness from the one Ms. Dynamite. A little a capella gem off her highly-acclaimed A Little Deeper debut album from way back in 2002.

Zuco 103 – Love Is Queen Omega (featuring Lee “Scratch” Perry)
An uplifting little uptempo number from Holland’s Zuco 103, featuring the vocal blessings of dub legen Lee “Scratch” Perry.

Don’t forget to check out our Welfare archives.

** DETAILED DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS **
We host all our Welfare downloads off-site, so what you need to do to download them is to click on the song name in the post, and then look for a download link on the page that that takes you to.

We mostly use divShare, so for divShare follow these steps to download the songs:

– Click on the name of the song. That will take you to a divShare page.

– On the divShare page, on the right-hand side, there should be a link that says “Download Original”. Click that link.

– That will take you to another page that says something like “You will be redirected to the download page in 15 seconds”. If you just wait a little while, the file will automatically download for you. Or, you can click on “Skip This Ad” at the top right of that page, and the file will start to download right away.

That should do it.

If the file is hosted on some other site besides divShare (like ZShare or MediaFire or something) then just look for a link on that site’s page that says download. When you click on the download link, it will probably do something similar to divShare and make you wait a handful of seconds before it starts the download (or offers a specific link to the download).

Hit us up in the comments if you need further instruction. We’re here to help. Thanks.

Daptone Records robbed blind.

In: Music, News, NYC

daptonelogo

So some assholes broke into and stole massive amounts of equipment and one empty safe from the Daptone Records studios/HQ in Brooklyn last night. The Daptone roster reads like a retro-soul/funk all star team. If you’re unfamiliar with Daptone, I suggest that you start catching up now.

From BrooklynVegan:

Friends and associates,

As you may have heard through the grapevine by now, Daptone was broken into last night. Unfortunately, there was a lot of equipment (mics, pre-amps, monitors, turntables, guitars, amps, computers, etc.) stolen and damaged. It is going to take us a while to go through everything and take full stock of what was stolen, and we are not supposed to touch anything until the cops come back to collect fingerprints so we can only guess what’s missing from some mic drawers and cabinets.
And, no, we did not have insurance. We had been shopping around with different companies earlier this month but had not signed a check, so nothing was insured. We are working on replacing the gate in front, installing an alarm system, and getting insurance, but it is President’s day so it’s not going as quickly as we would have liked.

Nydia’s computer was stolen (which wasn’t backed up) and the modems/ phone system was ripped out, so we’ll be relatively out of commission for a few days.

I would like to ask for everyone’s help first in keeping an eye out for all of our stuff showing up on ebay/craigslist/local music shops, and secondly (and more realistically) keeping an eye out for good deals on headphones, mics, pre-amps, etc. I could really use a heads up on any kind of studio package for sale or studio equipment to be possibly bought or borrowed as soon as possible. We have a session scheduled for Friday to lay down some music for (I know this sounds
surreal) Rod Stewart, and I’m going to have to get the studio running by then. I know I’m going to need to find headphones, cables, mics, and pre-amps by then. I’m not sure what else yet.

List of gear and Gabriel Roth’s letter continued below…

FROM GABRIEL ROTH

Upon first glance we are definitely missing:

Fender Super Guitar Amp in case
Fender Deluxe Guitar Amp
A whole bunch of headphones and wires
Nydia’s HP laptop computer
One Desktop MacIntosh Computer
One Purple Audio API style lunchbox with four Purple Audio Biz mic pre-amps
2 Yamaha NS10 monitors
Vintage Harmony Rocket Guitar
One steel string acoustic guitar
Martin Tenor sax in a gig bag
Technics 1200 turntable
Ion USB turntable
Teac Receiver/stereo amp
Sony dual deck CD burner/player
All of our modem/phone system stuff was ripped out and taken.
A whole bunch of condensor and dynamic microphones (I still need to figure out exactly what’s missing) The power supply for my Trident console was tossed and the board was moved (probably not gently) so the status of that is still questionable.
A baldwin organ was tossed and is probably broken.
Lacie External hard drive

Over the next few days, as we sort out the rubble, we are going to figure out what else we lost.

We are putting in a roll down front gate, alarm system, and finally getting our insurance happening this week. We are also going to hire a security guard to watch the house for tonight as the cops and alarm guy seemed pretty confident that they will be back with a truck now that they’ve seen what’s in here.

Thanks for keeping eyes open for us. AND PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ALONG TO ANYONE YOU THINK MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP US.

Thankfully, we all still have our health, ambition, tape machines, and sense of humor in tact. You can slow us down, but you can’t stop us. Sleep well knowing we here at Daptone will continue to…

Keep putting Soul up,
Gabriel Roth

P.S. On a lighter note, it seems like the burglars did drop a few items in order to lift Alex’s old safe out of here, which was VERY heavy, VERY unwieldy, and also VERY EMPTY!

Bonus: Inside the Daptone studios (the one in question) with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.

I often find myself scouring the ebays for information to make my workday go a little faster and decided to spread the love with a quick roundup. I’m sure Lil Tiger would prefer me to do this more often, but baby steps…or in other words, Lil Tiger steps.

As somebody who attempts to follow the media landscape with some regularity, this transcript from a recent Charlie Rose show caught my eye. I agree with the dude from the NYDN though, micropayments or charging for web content just isn’t going to work.

If you’re a Rockets fan, you should find this article interesting. Michael Lewis gives the “Moneyball” treatment to Rockets GM Daryl Morey, and Shane Battier gets some major ink as well. Battier is one of those classic examples of a guy that you hate until he plays for your favorite team.

I’ll miss the Diesel when he’s gone. The Shaq Dance video is reason 999,999 why Shaq is a pretty funny dude.

And ending with another Diesel clip — I’m just going to go out on a limb and say this play was more staged than anything you’ll ever see at a Globetrotters game. No way Howard lets Shaq throw the ball through his legs and then not get back as Shaq goes backdoor. Boo!

The talented homiemo (that’s short for emo homie) DJ Neil Armstrong has a new project in the works entitled Bittersweet, Part 2:

[audio:http://www.5thplatoon.com/audio/bittersweeetpart2-sample.mp3|titles=Bittersweet Part 2]

Continuing with his impeccable ability to pluck at the heartstrings through a selection of tunes & perfectly placed sound bites, Neil relates the complexities of love in song form. Based on the snippet above, his story plays out like an 80s romantic comedy from the perspective of the unsung hero, you know, the type that is often overlooked and side-stepped because they’re a bald-headed nerd with glasses who pose with huge, crazy-expensive bottles of champagne. Yeah, that guy.

I’m inspired by the amount of dedication. I really am.

Rick Ross – Kiss My Pinky Ring (more snooze beef trackzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

Download here

As I listen to this, I have two feelings:

1. Lil Wayne was extraordinarily high when this was recorded and played back to him.
2. As a joke or payback or something, Wayne’s engineer or staff or someone leaked this track that likely should have and maybe will have autotune added when it’s properly released (if that ever happens).

LL will definitely have something to say, even if only privately, about this.

Lil Wayne – Around the way girl from the mixtape, The Hottest Nigga Under the Sun.
