4th of July Rooftop BBQ Party

For all my NY peoples that are in town for the holiday weekend, I’ll be spinning at a rooftop party in Brooklyn Heights on the 4th of July (Saturday). Come through and enjoy the food and music, and then head over to The Rub afterward to check out JD and Mel at The Rub’s 7th Anniversary party. It’s gonna be a big night all around. Here’s the info on the rooftop party:

If you’re looking to avoid crowds, get away from cheesy parties, and are not that much into watching fireworks, come spend Independence day with BBQ, mojitos and good tunes on Mackenzie’s sweet Brooklyn Heights rooftop. Q and Lil Tiger will bring the vibes with a blend of House, Hip-Hop, Soul, Afrobeat and Reggae. The rooftop is located one block from the waterfront and has a full, unobstructed view of the city. It’s a remarkable view!

It’s BYOB, or you can bring cash for the bar.

Hope to see y’all there and feel free to invite friends.

For the rainy day (or any day).

Choimatic “20 Minutes Of Mahogany”

This is a mix by the homie Moe Choi aka Choimatic. A blend of good, soulful music from a dude who loves Morrissey as much as he loves M.O.P. I mean look at dude: he’s got gold fronts and has lines shaved in his head and he hangs out with Large Professor, Rob Swift and DJ Lomang (Ghostface’s DJ in China) while wearing a Depeche Mode lambswool knit sweater. Mind blasting.

You should listen on the strength of that alone.

Catch him spinning with me (Empanadamn) next Sunday, June 28, at Littlefield for the mixtape exchange party that I have yet to create a clever name for.

Big L 5/30 Tribute mixed by DJ Soul

In: Downloads, Mixes, Music, NYC

Another well compiled mix by NYC’s DJ Soul.

It’s been ten years since the rap game lost Big L. On Saturday, May 30th (which would have been his 35th birthday), I dropped an online mix to remind people why he was one of the illest. Shouts to Lord Finesse, DJ Premier, Rich King & the brother of Big L for their assistance and allowing the project to happen. – DJ Soul

I know this is old, but I hadn’t seen it until last night, and it makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside that I can’t help but re-post it here. (Thanks to my friend Adrienne for sending this my way).

The kids are part of PS22 Chorus, a group of about 60 fifth-graders from Staten Island’s P.S. 22 in Granteville, directed by music teacher Gregg Breinberg. They have a ton of clips online at their YouTube channel. You can read more about them in their local paper, or follow their day-to-day achievements at the PS22 Chorus blog.

I had seen these kids do a Coldplay tune online somewhere a while back, and that was great, too. But “Jóga” is a song I actually give a shit about, so this one hits me a little deeper.

Soul Imperial – From 9:00 Until mix

Soul Imperial

It’s a beautiful day outside in NY, and this new Soul Imperial mix from the good folks at Mixtape Riot is the perfect soundtrack. Ballantino and Elegante put a little of everything into this one and it works from front to back.

In their words:

This is a mix to make you feel good and help celebrate life, just like we’ve been doing in Brooklyn so far this summer.
