When the city’s most recognized on-air DJs get together to celebrate, it’s always a party. But give them a special reason to reunite and reflect on a 10 years of solidarity, then it’s really goin’ down! KBXX The Boxx’s Almighty Kracker Nuttz are going “A Decade Strong” and gathering folks up the night before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, November 26, at Club Next (2020 McKinney) for what should be absolutely memorable.

Founded by in 1998 by brothers who shared a vision of integrating culture into their music and entertainment, DJ KleanCutt and Baby Jae established the Kracker Nuttz in the city of Houston. Their passion for turntables and good music soon became a strong bond that resonated with friends, family, and the community.

In no time the KNuttz organization grew with the addition of long-time friend and radio veteran DJ Ron EG. Also added to the group were DJs Akshun Kid, Kosuri, Cipher, Eddie, Milo, Rodney, Nino, Debbie, and finally Roy. Soon after the KNuttz became a staple in Houston’s nightlife and on the airwaves. They landed a coveted spot on Houston’s widely acclaimed hip hop and R&B station, “97.9 the BOX.” The KNuttz had hit the Houston scene in full force, incorporating their turntables, tricks, and scratches into all of their live radio mixes.

The KNuttz make regular guest appearances at shows, special events and some of the South’s top music venues–proof that the music industry has taken a notice of their crazy antics. Most notably, the KNuttz entertained events such as the premiere party for film X-Men (2000) in New York City, the Import Expo Show (2000, 2001) hosted by M&N Entertainment, R Kelly’s “Best Of Both Worlds” after party, and opened for legendary rap groups De La Soul, Common, and the Pharcyde, just to name a few.

Entertainment is covered when you call on The Kracker Nuttz: everything from radio to the club, competing in DJ Battles, hosting parties, producing and remixing, and to hands-on, face-to-face street promotions. They continue to leave a lasting impression, because the Kracker Nuttz stay “ALL UP IN YOUR MOUTH!”

A Decade Strong features a solid lineup of local cats alongside the KNuttz DJ roster. The Main Room offers up Dayta, Squincy Jones, Klean Cutt, Kosuri, Akshun Kid, Baby Jae and Cipher; in the Smoking Section is Ace Booncoon, Gonz, Klinch, El Roy Boogie and Brotha Jibril. Early arrival is strongly suggested.

Please contact Fahrenheit Media to set up interviews with those involved with the Kracker Nuttz event or to arrange for press/photo passes for the night. For more info, visit www.myspace.com/krackernuttz_promotions or www.fahrenheit-media.com.

Professor Qbert opens Skratch University

25 Nov 2008 category: Misc. 1 comment.

I have nothing but respect for the work that Qbert has done to innovate and progress the art of scratching. I am equally in awe of the the man’s business acumen and have little doubt that anything he does will succeed (with the exception of the QFO). Bearing all this in mind, I do have to say that his latest venture, Qbert’s Skratch University, is being debuted too late to be effective. Not to mention that it’s a premium service that requires a subscription, whereas, there have been many online resources, audio, video and textual alike, that have offered roughly the same service free of charge. On to the details…

ArtistWorks, Inc announced today they have partnered with DJ Qbert of
ThudRumble to create the “Qbert Skratch University”, an online video learning site. The groundbreaking University is expected to launch in early 2009. DJ Qbert, known to many as the “Undisputed King of Turntablism”, uses a series of progressive videos to teach all levels of Scratching techniques from basic to exotic and beat juggling. This format of exchanging videos with a legendary Turntablist where the entire community learns is the first of its kind. Turntablists around the world use simple and innovative video management technology created by ArtistWorks. Student members post videos on the University site and using the latest in Internet video technology, Qbert responds to student videos, offering his personal guidance and suggestions.

John Forté? Really? I guess George Bush does care about black people …

25 Nov 2008 category: Music, News 1 comment.

… or at least, a black person with prominent, rich white people pleading his case persistently.

Fugees affiliate John Forté

Shrub pardoned 14 people earlier today (Monday) and commuted the sentences of two others, including Fugees contributor John Forté, who was serving 14 years after getting busted bringing liquid cocaine through Newark airport.

According to HipHopDX:

The reduced sentence comes after numerous high profile celebrities and politicians were writing the President on the musician and producer’s behalf. Most notably, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch and 1970s singer/songwriter Carly Simon and her son were instrumental in garnering attention to the incarcerated Hip Hop artist. Hatch is also a musician.

Orrin Hatch? Are you fucking kidding me? I can’t wait to hear Forté’s work on How His Glory Still Shines (The Remixes!). Should be a banger. Most anticipated cassette of 2009. Bet.

Biggie wrote Lil Kim’s rhymes…shocking.

So yeah, we all KNEW this. But a backstory: back in a past life I used to run up obscenely high phone bills in exchange for records to do a couple of radio shows that are of little importance in the grand scheme of things (but try telling me that back then…). So anyhow, I used to talk to record promoters at labels from time to time and one of them would ALWAYS have stuff that I hadn’t heard or found a way to get my hands on. Only he was stingy. He would let me hear them over the phone, but never send the shit to me. One night I’m talking to him and he plays me Biggie rhyming Lil Kim’s “Queen Bitch”…the entire verse down to the “queen bitch, disease free bitch…”. Quite odd, to say the least. He explained that he wrote the song and then recorded it as a reference track for Kim to make sure she stayed on beat, etc. Gotta love the game. So I begged for a copy of it and the dude never sent it. Probably for good reason. I would have leaked THE FUCK out of that tape. So anyway, I’m looking for something today and hit up the ebays to do a search for something and lo and behold, up pops this site: ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com. I start looking around and the first thing I see is THIS:

Biggie “Queen Bitch” (reference track)

Of course, I am like holy shit. It was one of those “holy grails” that I always wanted to get a copy of, but never had been able to locate. And that was just the beginning…that site is now permanently bookmarked and I’d like to buy each of the contributors to that site an adult beverage of their choosing at some point in time.

To close, if you can’t write or at least rap what somebody else has written for you then you should find another line of fucking work. MC Lyte didn’t need MC Milk to record a reference track for Cha Cha Cha, did she? [/steps off soapbox]

Changing subjects: Too many other things to point towards there and maybe I’m late on the site (if so, fuck all of you for not telling me sooner). But gotdamn that was about as good of a gift as I could ask for on a Thursday (besides seeing more Pam Beasley on this week’s The Office).

Thnaks to the Buhbomp crew for allowing me to enter their house–let the record show that I have wiped my feet on the rug and am looking forward to sharing random items that I locate on the interwebs for your enjoyment. Well, really it is just for my enjoyment…but you all win by association, I guess.

Lil’ Doogie (I’m fresh)

20 Nov 2008 category: Video no comments yet.

I’m really late on this, but I just stumbled upon this dude’s videos. Lil’ Doogie is a young puppet from Marrero, Lousiana (outside of New Orleans) who’s a regular-ass dude and, like everybody else, is an aspiring rapper. His videos range from the day in the life of Doogie chillin with his homies, to footage of his live performances and freestyle sessions. His EP My Mind is available for download and features beats by Chippy, a chipmunk producer.

Lil’ Doogie gives some shouts & wishes a Happy Thanksjibbin

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yerns from lil Doogie on Vimeo.

Go see Slumdog Millionaire, period

18 Nov 2008 category: Films, NYC, Video no comments yet.

Danny Boyle is a living legend and quite possibly the most versatile director in Hollywood. The movie shares similar visual style to some that are present in Fernando Meirelles’ movies and in Rodrigo Prieto’s work. Slumdog Millionaire is gritty, heartbreaking, depressing and beautiful all at once. Make it a point to see this movie before it leaves theatres.

Bonus: Freida Pinto is the single most gorgeous thing on this planet. Deal!
