Cashless

How the hell did June get here already? Here’s another monthly Welfare handout from the buhbOmp crew to give you a boost while summer slowly kicks in.

cashless | If you got a playlist, then you shoulda stayed home!

Little Dragon Feat. Trackademicks – After The Rain (Trackademics Remix)
*Sorry only a 192kbps file
I first heard Yukimi Nagano’s soulful croonage over Sleepwalker’s “Afloat” (big up to the dude Aser for dropping the knowledge gem way back in 2006) and she’s been a name I’ve casually followed since. Here she is with the rest of her band, Little Dragon with some remix love from Bay Area producer Trackademics.

Sa-Ra – Bitch Baby
*Sorry only a 192kbps file here AGAIN
Seriously ill summer track that just happens to be the lead single from Sa-Ra’s official debut album, Nuclear Evolution, The Age of Love. Make sure you cop this album when it drops!

Snap aka Red Clay – Live Learn
This man is a Houston legend. A staple in the underground hip hop scene here, Snap’s always impressed me with vicious wordplay and even more dangerous delivery. Big ups to the crew over at Rappers I know, so leaking this.

The Dream – Walkin’ on the Moon (UMYO Remix)
UMYO is yet another in a short line of Scandinavian producers that I’m rapidly becoming obsessed with. His treatment of Walkin’ on the Moon mellows out the vibe a bit, but still keeps it’s club compliance.

Floatingpoints – Lovemelikethis(ftps remix)
Ok, I need the venti latte pass with extra foam on this remix, but I’m making up for it with extra heavy early rotation. Holleur at it, folkels.

dj lil tiger | on some nostalgia shit

Leela James – My Joy (Quentin Harris Vocal)
Classic deep house production from the legend Quentin Harris.

Cedric “Im” Brooks – United Africa
Uplifting little number from Jamaica’s Cedric Brooks off his big band jazz/reggae album United Africa.

Joe Bataan – Chevere Que Chevere
Here’s a funky, soulful, percussive tune from El Barrio‘s Godfather of Latin Soul, Joe Bataan, off his 2005 Call My Name LP. Black Filipinos stand up! Halfies stay winning.

Do or Die feat. Twista – Po Pimp
Dolla Holla Show classic. This is the tune that put Twista back on the map for me.

Fugazi – Sweet and Low
Since I’m traipsing through the sprawling fields of my youth, I’ll throw in this favorite of mine from punk heroes Fugazi. This still gets me every time I hear it.

empanadamn | spring 2009: you half-stepped.

Jay-Z “D.O.A.” (Death Of Autotune)
F-auto-tune, hip-hop is dead, where the real MCs at?, yadda yadda. Who cares? I’m just happy to hear that Dion is staying busy. This song will not change the game.

Ellie Goulding “Starry Eyed” (Jakwob Remix)
This was hipped to me by Elz. Right now, this is it for me; the tune is getting played on repeat like I was a teenage girl in love. Now, I’m not totally into dubstep, but something about girly-pop vocals, dashes of xylophone and galloping drum change-ups against the low-end grit and grind that sounds like a giant electric can opener getting in a fight with a trash compactor that totally does it for me.

The Isley Brothers “For The Love Of You”
Not only sample worthy, but a stand alone, feel good track for that summer breeze steez.

Koop “Summer Sun” (Feat. Yukimi Nagano)
I discovered Koop while watching TV at a concert. Though I couldn’t hear anything from the video, I was captivated by the style of the video with its layers, shapes and fast cuts, but moreover WHO THE HELL IS THAT HOT CHICK UP IN THERE SANGIN’?!?!? After reading the credits, I went home did the research and boom: Koop -> Yukimi Nanago. At the time, she was probably 16 or 17, so I’m totally a pedol’ dirty-scum-bag. Forgive me for having taste in good music. Catch her group Little Dragon at SummerStage this July with an awesome line-up!
(Side note, Koop is the reason why Aser & I are friends.)

Sonny & Cher “I Got You Babe”
Last, but not least, this is a special dedication to some good, long-time friends Jamie & Wes. The two love birds went away to Paris a couple of weeks ago and returned engaged. So this one’s for them – congratulations! I love you guys. (No auto-tune-o.)

Now that the gloom and doom of Tax Day is behind us, we can return to the finer things in life, like desperately hoping we stay employed or fed or mobile or just plain sane as the rest of the world crumbles around us. With that in mind, your faithful and loyal representatives here at buhbOmp give you another installment of Welfare. It might not cure your financial troubles, but it will definitely help set your mind free. It’s our own humble little stimulus package. Enjoy.

cashless | Soured and salted 4life (Softhands edition)

Diamond District – I Mean Business
DC’s producer du jour, Oddisee along with rappers X.O. and YU are Diamond District. I first heard Oddisee on Pete Rosenberg’s A Rosenberg Oddiseemixtape (look at that cover artwork, I don’t even need to tell you who’s style that is) and have been checking for him ever since. I kinda picked I Mean Business arbitrarily, but it definitely gives off the boom-bappish feel of the album and Oddisee’s production in general.

DJ Day – Still Ray

DJ Day – Skyy (Can you feel me)

Ok, this is a 2-parter from one of our favorite dudes in the game, DJ Day.
These are both haunting interpolations and anything I could say about them would do them no justice whatsoever, so I’ll let the dude, Day, break it down in his own words. Via Like a Throttle

Tuesday, April 7, 2009
This is all Cosmo Baker’s fault. I mean, I’ve always loved Saadiq going back to the TTT days, but hearing Cosmo’s mix of his work really put it all in perspective. Raphael Saadiq is a genius. Period. Just listen and you’ll see. From Tony! Toni! Tone! & Stevie Wonder to Q-Tip & DJ Quik, he is just that dude.

So, without jumping further on his nuts…fast forward a couple days later and I’m driving around town bumping this CD. “Still Ray” came on and stayed on and that’s when I knew I had to re-do it (now I know how Dre must’ve felt). I came home and listened to it, figured out the piano part and played everything else from there. Once I was finished I called my man Miles Bonny to lay down vocals and trumpet like only he can and here it is, free for you. …

This was going to (and still might) come out on vinyl with another Saadiq cover I did that’s an instrumental. I’ll keep you all posted and I might just post it on the strength*.

*That track, “Skyy (Can you feel me)” is linked above.

Dãm-Funk – Kill Dat aka Kill Dat Muthafucka
Snoop Dogg, DJ Quik, Kat Williams, Suga Free & Dãm-Funk. What do these hood certified men have to do with each other? All have fabulous, silky, luxurious, bitch perms! I gotta get my shit did soon so I can show out on Butt Nekkid Wednesdays!

B.o.B. – I’ll Be in The Sky (Astronote Remix)
Fact: B.o.B. is just straight up corny. Since Haterz Everywhere, B.o.B. has been on some after-school special shit. One more feelgoody two-shoes joint outta this dude, and I’m officially classifying him as a gospel rapper. Producer Astronote allows me to temporarily forget this.

empanadamn | Skinnier than hip-hop

U.N.K.L.E. “Bloodstain”
This weather got me ag and reverting to my leave-me-be, emo skull thuggery. Here’s a personal favorite, moody track with sad girl lyrics from DJ Shadow-produced UNKLE.

Junior Boys “Parallel Lines”
Junior Boys is not only Michael Jackson’s favorite department to hang while at JC Penny’s (just kiddin’, homie), but a gleaming Canadian export implementing live instrumentation, production and vocals. This is the lead track off their most recent album Begone Dull Care.

Camera Obscura “Careless Love”
This Scottish outfit is a breath of fresh air / palate cleanser for a lot of stuff that I’ve been subjected to recently. It’s musically clean without being sterile, inflecting light to heavy-heartedness throughout. Chicks (like me) really dig this stuff. Also, just to clarify, there’s no bag pipes in this so don’t get your hopes up, McScrooge.

Depeche Mode “In Sympathy”
Gotta give it up to these dudes. They’ve been putting out music, performing and touring for close to 3 decades. Their sixty-11th album Sounds Of The Universe, dropping later this month, continues the tradition of their later albums with the darknesses prevailing over their shiny-happy new wave beginnings. This one accomplishes being depressing and uptempo at the same time.

Prince “Let’s Pretend We’re Married”
I went to DJ Spinna‘s Soul Slam party last Saturday with my friend Minuette and while dancing Diddy pulled me into his circle of fun ( || ). After extinguishing my dancing shoes, I opened a Twitter account just to thank @iamdiddy, then filmed a live video blog on the spot to tell my friends around the world the news about Cassie’s new half-shaved head. SIKE! (about the Twitter / v-blog part)

Estelle f. Kardinal Offishall – Magnificent
This song is catchy as hell, and I can’t stop listening to it. I’ve also been a long time Kardinal fan, so that helps. Ronson got the touch.

Black Milk – Mo Power (right-click and save as)
Detroit’s Black Milk are really doing it for me lately, and this tune is sick as hell. Short, but sick as hell. Dudes got the drum game down solid. (Proppers to Rappers I Know (as usual) for showing me the way.)
[audio:http://www.rappersiknow.com/media/blackmilk/Mo%20Power.mp3|titles=Black Milk – Mo Power]

JP ft Ash Man & Xei – Jungle Skank
This tune epitomizes everything I love about Funky House right now. Got the Afro-Caribbean tribal vibe. Got raw, sexy club feel with the proper low end. Got the change-ups. All kinds of unusual shit going on here, and I’m all about it.

Jah Cure – Searching
This is my favorite off the Indiscretions riddim. Jah Cure always brings the true emotion, and this tune makes me want to curl up next to my gal and pretend the rest of the world doesn’t exist.

Mondo Grosso – Now You Know Better
This is off Mondo Grosso‘s MG4 album that came out in 2000, and it still sounds great. I’m also a sucker for anything that showcases Amel Larrieux‘s beautiful and mesmerizing voice.

cashless | WTF FML FTW

Rye Rye – Bang feat M.I.A
“I heard the song and I had to scream. They had [her] rhyming over a hyped drum machine”. The jury’s still out for me on this cut, but I’m throwing it up because Rye Rye’s (no Ri Ri) lined herself up to take the hipster rap queen crown. Bet that.

U-N-I & Ro BLVD – Stylin
“Oh, you mad cuz I’m styling on you.” Actually I’m not mad at “Stylin”. I am bugging on how obviously Kanye West influenced the track is though. Also, did they diss The Knux? I hope so! Someone had to diss those talentless fools sometime.

Dj Class – I’m the ish feat. Kanye
I’m definitely not feeling the remix as much as I am the O.G. The Kanyelectro treatment scrubs away the hard B-More coat of the O.G. that I enjoyed. Whatever, blah. There’s a Lil Wayne and Estelle remix coming soon too (via Estelle’s twitter account). Look for “I’m the ish” to take up where “Day n Nite” left off. Becky, holleur.

UGK – Swishas & Erb feat. Sleepy Brown
Long live PIMP C. UGK4LIFE! What else needs to be said?

Eddie Kendricks – Date with the Rain (extended)
One of the OG steppers, Kendricks had a distinct voice that you can recognize from the first few notes. “Date with the Rain” is no exception. Presented in it’s extended form. Peep how Spring this feels.

dj lil tiger | cold be damned

Q-Tip – We Fight, We Love (Remix) feat. Kanye West and Consequence
Something new here from the suddenly prolific Q-Tip, with the ubiquitous ‘Ye and the second-coming of Jarobi.

Deee-Lite feat. Q-Tip – Groove is in the Heart (Morsy Mix)
Sticking with the Q-Tip theme, Nanachill‘s DJ Morsy gives this dancefloor classic a subtle re-fresh.

Wayne Marshall – Blame De Weed
Because it had to be done. Wayne Marshall gives Jamie Foxx’s Blame It a hit of that good shit.

Teedra Moses – I Think Of You
I think folks are sleeping on Teedra Moses. This is the tune that closes out her Complex Simplicity album from a few years ago, and it’s a really touching and personal number. The actual song comes in at about the 1:40 mark, but Teedra’s opening words and the snippet of gospel at the beginning give the song its proper context. This song makes me want to hug my mom and never let go.

Sam Cooke – Mean Old World
Just a beautiful tune from the master, Sam Cooke, off of his Night Beat album.

empanadamn | Yeah Yeah Nos | Serato-ready

Wale “Chillin'” (Feat. Lady Caca)
After all the foot work in his Nike boots, Wale got signed to Interscope and is slated to release his album Attention Deficit this summer. A preview of the album, “Chillin'” features Lady Caca as she shits all over the track in her best M.I.A. impression. :*( Come on, dawg!!!

Jamie Foxx “Blame It” (Ted Smooth Blend Feat. T-Pain)
Here’s a different take on a club favorite. Switch it up and get it crunk on dem hoez.

Cam’ron “Cookies & Apple Juice” (Feat. Bird Lady)
Killa! First with the compelling “I Hate My Job” and now this one, Cam is back. And it looked like a Dipset reunion was in the works when Jim Jones reached out to Cam on the Funk Flex show on Hot 97 with hopes of getting the crew back together and taking over. Cam responded with a negatory, and chunked a deuce out the roof of his Camborghini while driving away.

The-Dream “Let Me See The Booty (Feat. Lil’ Jon)”
The litmus test for the shorty with the winning assets. Lil’ Jon puts some extra sexy on it.

Lil’ SNS “AIM So Crazy” (Feat. DJ Webstar)*
Son of Harlem’s mixtape DJ S&S, Lil’ SNS does his thang over a blitzkrieg of AIM sound bites courtesy of DJ Webstar. This one takes me back to the many lonely hours logged on AOL instant messenger before I discovered the sound setting preferences. Bound to give all the AIM heads / chatroom predators a seizure.

* We don’t actually have a downloadable version of this tune yet, but we still wanted to put it on your radar anyway.

  • 9:38 PM cashless – Had a GREAT time at SXSW with some of the best people alive.

RECAP: Despite my utter lack of scheduling, and preparation, I still managed to eek out a great time in slightly less than 36 hours. We did however run into some technical issues during that time, most notably when the battery of my G1 died shortly after arriving at the Fader Fort. So I wasn’t able to blog/tweet much about the great performances of Bun B, Jadakiss, the entire G.O.O.D. Music family featuring Kanye West or the Diplo/Blaqstarr I Heart Comix afterparty. Actually, by the time that Kanye hit the stage I was on triple stage inebriation and probably couldn’t have posted much to begin with. It was a short trip, lasting only a day and a half, but possibly one of the best music conference trips I’ve gone on since my first. Shout out to DBDR.

I speak the truth, I tell no lie

In: Cashless, Crazy Talk, Elz, Empanadamn, Lil Tiger, Misc.

Been masturbating, since the 4th of July. Don’t believe me? I can prove it!

And because of it, I must tell all those who peruse this site the truth about the people who write this drivel! They are not who you think they are! Think they just spin the records that you love, huh? Well I’m here to tell you, IT’S ALL LIES!

EMPANADAMN: This person has never actually eaten an empanada! His name springs from a severe case of dislexia and a fixation on the inevitable damnation of all pandas. He is a 6’7″ native of Oslo, and eats soul food 8 times a week, particularly neck bones and whiskey.

CASHLESS: Tries to portray himself as a poor man? Claims his nationality to be Jamaican? Wrong, he is actually the independently wealthy son of an Irish businessman, heir to a fortune built on urinal cakes. His facial hair has been known break broad swords and he has rejected the microwave. He’s also the former world record holder for longest recorded camel clutch on a teenager. (Never call him by his real name, Paddy Higgins O’Houlihan Flanigan Fitzpatrick Hanrihan IIX).

LIL TIGER: Born and raised in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, he is a hater of all things circular, and his eyebrows are implants. He spent his youth throwing rocks at onlookers as he practiced his “dontchaknow” dj style in nothing but a beanie and socks during the long winter months. He prides himself on being able to pee all 50 states in alphabetical order in the snow, off one 12 oz. beverage.

ELZ: The most diabolical tiddly winks player ever produced by the great state of West Virginia. Other than that, he’s your normal half-Dutch, half-Malaysian, half-Greek, half-Madagascarian Appalachian warlord with a beard thicker than mature oak tree trunk.

So you see my friends, these are not the people who you think they are! I trust that now that I have pulled away the veil, you can fully appreciate them for who they are.

Until the next time,
Join the Resistance!!!
